DIY Teeth Whitening: Facts and Fiction

Teeth Whitening in Katy Texas

We all know the value of a dazzling smile full of super white teeth, right?

Many of us believe that a do-it-yourself method at home will reap rewards and deliver that Hollywood smile of perfection, but do any of these methods really work, and are they safe for our teeth?

DIY teeth whitening techniques are all over YouTube and social media, but our Katy TX dental experts took a further look to dispel these popular so-called remedies.

Activated Charcoal/Baking Soda

You may have seen the buzz on black, messy kinds of toothpaste and other powders that contain activated charcoal to lift stains and brighten.

Some people swear by it, but your dentist knows better, and even the American Dental Association (ADA) is not on the bandwagon for using charcoal whiteners.

For one thing, its texture is abrasive and might even harm your teeth by wearing down the tooth enamel.

Baking soda is another old-fashioned trick that some like for whitening, but again, the product is too abrasive. Dental experts caution against the white powder because it can scrub away enamel and instead, lead to your tooth’s dentin (yellow tissue) showing through.

Fruit/Acids

Another old-fashioned DIY whitening technique involves using fruit like strawberries, oranges or lemons made into a paste with apple cider vinegar and baking soda.

Many people make up the scrub or paste and brush their teeth, allowing the formula to sit in their mouth for a few minutes before rinsing it out.

Again, the dental community is not keen on any teeth whitener that uses acid to remove stains and brighten. You’re just eroding your precious tooth’s enamel and getting little in return for it.

Oil/Spice Pulling

YouTube has plenty of videos on oil pulling and adding spices like pungent turmeric powder to zap stains and take your teeth to a whiter shade or two.

Beware, say, dental experts. Swishing your mouth with oils like coconut and using turmeric powder in the mix can actually loosen crowns and fillings by corroding the dental metals.

Also, no scientific evidence exists that says your teeth will whiten after oil or spice pulling.

Best Natural Whitening

If you’re looking for a healthy white smile, there are a few steps to follow:

  • Keep up your dental visits for cleanings and check-ups
  • Brush your teeth two times a day
  • Always floss after to remove plaque
  • Use an ADA-recommended whitening toothpaste
  • Avoid all kinds of tobacco because it yellows teeth
  • Limit foods/drinks that stain teeth like coffee, tea, red wine, blueberries, soy sauce, tomato sauces, etc.
